Description:
The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a Director for the Robert HendersonLanguage Media Center (RHLMC). This is a non-tenure-stream 12-month facultyposition in the Department of Linguistics. The start date is July 1, 2009.
Duties include:1. Facilitating and supporting the use of technology for languageinstruction throughout the university by working with language instructorsand coordinators;2. Setting policies for the efficient use and management of RHLMC facilities;3. Ensuring that the RHLMC technology is kept current, and determinewhether, when, and how new technologies should be implemented;4. Working in close collaboration with the RHLMC manager, who is in chargeof day-to-day operations in the RHLMC, to ensure the smooth functioning ofthe facility;5. Planning and managing yearly budgets for personnel, equipment, and services;6. Promoting the effective use of language learning technology throughoutreach and training;7. To the extent possible, expanding RHLMC services and capacities throughthe development of outside funds through both internal and external grants;8. Teach one course per semester in the spring and fall semesters in theDepartment of Linguistics.
The RHLMC consists of two computer classrooms networked to a server, arecording studio, and extensive language learning technology resources. Seethe website provided above for more information on the facilities andactivities.The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in instructional technology anddesign, foreign language teaching, or second language acquisition/appliedlinguistics with a concentration in technological applications to languagelearning.
Candidates for this position must have excellent communication andinterpersonal skills. Experience managing a similar facility is desirable,but not required. Candidates must be knowledgeable in all major computerplatforms. A knowledge of networking technology, digital sound and videoprocessing software, web applications, or streaming technology is alsodesirable. The successful candidate must have a demonstrated excellence inclassroom teaching at the university level.
